Syria Map

Aleppo is a charming city in northern Syria recognized for being one of the 4 Syrian sites on the UNESCO's world Heritage list. Located at the crossroads of several trade routes from the 2nd millennium B.C., and considered one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, Aleppo was ruled successively by the Hittites, Assyrians, Arabs, Mongols, Mamelukes and Ottomans.

The striking sight of the 13th-century citadel with "an austere grandeur of its own" and the suddenness of its appearance makes it seem almost unreal. The 12th century Great Mosque and various 17th century madrassas, palaces and hammams all form part of the city's cohesive and unique urban fabric.

Abraham (pbuh) is said to have camped on the acropolis which, long before his time, served as the foundation of a fortress where the Aleppo citadel is standing now. He milked his grey cow there; hence Aleppo's name "Halab Al-Shahba".

Aleppo is also famous for its architecture; for its attractive churches, mosques, schools, tombs and baths.
